Surrender

Parents, Grandparents, Caregivers, Mentors…a message for you.

In a yoga practice on New Years Eve I choose a word/intention for the year. December 31, 2018 I chose the word Surrender. I’m discovering it takes me years to dig into the intention to notice glimmers of growth.

Or, a global pandemic pushes me into the intention with the force of hurricane winds. COVID-19 is pushing Surrender to the front of everything – work, kids schoolwork, screen time, home upkeep, exercise, self care, relationships and more.

In this sixth week of Safer-at-Home, after pushing against the hurricane force winds with family schedules, lists upon lists upon lists, efforts to keep the house clean, sky high goals for all but especially myself, beating myself up when we miss yet another Zoom commitment…Surrender appeared everywhere.

I heard myself coaching friends to surrender and let things go.

I saw glimpses of myself moving towards surrender of the house being kept clean without needing to make excuses for it. I felt a loosening of the sky high goals. And finally (I often need to be hit by a proverbial 2×4 before I slow down and really listen) after days thinking about creating the “perfect daily devotion” to share with Bethel, I surrendered.

The devotion didn’t need to be perfect, the family room doesn’t have to be clean each night, life will go on if movement goals are not reached, kids will survive if they eat s’mores for dinner and no veggies (it might be their favorite memory of this time!). You can check out the devotion here. I read from Rachel Macy Stafford’s book, “Hands Free Mama”, about Surrender sitting on the floor amongst legos and piano books and with youngest child, Theo. I surrendered to doing the video devotion in one take surrendered to letting it be what it would be.

And it was healing for me to create.

As I lean into Surrender I can feel the knot in my chest and my tight hamstrings loosen a bit. I notice that as I surrender, my children’s enormous mood swings become a little less jarring. I notice my children surrendering in their own ways. Choosing to lean in for a hug instead of exploding with anger, asking for help instead of insisting on working alone and ending up frustrated, talking about missing friends and school instead of keeping so busy to avoid those feelings.

Surrender.

Scary and healing.

Dark and light.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Epic Parent Fail – Holy Week

Have you thought this during Safer-at Home?
“You are always asking for more time – this is it – get moving!”
Immediately following that thought,
I make a to-do list a mile long or I dive into the hidden s’mores supplies.
Near the top of my list was “Slow down for Holy Week.”
Every year Holy Week is here and gone with too many activities between Palm Sunday and Easter for us to sink into Holy Week.
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE YEAR!

And now it’s Easter Sunday.

I had good intentions to make palms last Sunday, didn’t happen.
Then I thought, no big deal, we will do it on Monday
(way to be flexible Cindy!).
Then it was Thursday, argh, didn’t get to the palms.
We are all at home, why can we not get to all of these things?! Ah!

Okay, Maundy Thursday. Ooh! Let’s make a seder meal! Bethel sent those neat instructions in the Daily Devotion email, easy!
Wait, we have very little of those foods in the house
and we are avoiding the grocery store
and my children will definitely not eat most of this food.
Hmm…It’s okay, we will come up with our own!
6pm Maundy Thursday…ugh, too tired and cranky after a day of both parents trying to work from home
and three children annoyed with online school
and driving one another crazy.
We’ll catch the seder meal on Friday.

It’s Good Friday. Maybe it’s not appropriate to do a seder meal on Good Friday? Worried about breaking church “rules” (Note: I’ve realized these are self-imposed rules).
I’m sad thinking about Mary watching her son die on the cross
and my children just want to know when the Easter Bunny is coming and it will probably be extra special this year because we are stuck at home (as I remind them “safe” at home).
Mom anxiety attack is just around the corner.
How is the Easter Bunny doing with preparation? Why are my children (children of a Children’s Ministry leader…) only concerned about presents from the Easter Bunny?

Do they think this is Christmas?

What about JESUS?!

Epic Parent Fail.

And then on Friday night I escaped to Facebook for a few minutes while kids were getting ready for bed. I stumbled across Bethel’s live coverage of the Good Friday service and heard Amy Hartsough singing and everything around me stopped. My children joined me and we caught the very end of the service. The lightning and music pulled us in.

We decided to get the computer and watch the entire service cuddled up on the couch together. We had great discussion about the seven last words by Jesus on the cross. We were sad together.

Holy Week still happened.
Just not as planned.
As it has for thousands of years.
And will for thousands of years.

Let’s breathe and see what this Easter brings.
Perhaps we will be surprised.

The large brown box, in the photo above, holds all three of my children, who just 20 minutes ago were yelling at one another over everything (the puppy, the waffles, the markers…rough life, huh?!) and now they are writing and practicing an Easter skit together
in the sweetest most patient voices you can imagine.

Let’s be gentle with ourselves and others.
Let’s speak to ourselves and others as Jesus would speak to us.
Let’s remember we, and ALL, are LOVED unconditionally.
He is Risen! Hallelujah!

Families attend the 9am worship service together in the sanctuary. During the service, children are encouraged to come forward for a message from a pastor or a church leader.  Following the Children’s Moment, the children leave with their Sunday School Leaders for a fun morning of JAM (“Jesus And Me!” featuring the day’s theme, story, and song), small group classes per age/grade level, and either Choir or Kids Fellowship.Bethel’s Sunday School programming is for children ages 2 (potty training is not necessary – we can help as needed!) – 5th grade. The morning concludes at 11am.  Please contact cindy@bethel-madison.org for more details. We look forward to meeting you and your children!

Preschool Sunday School Overview

Bethel teaches our preschoolers three simple, but powerful, truths. The entire curriculum is constructed to meet your preschoolers where they are cognitively, spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially. Through age appropriate activities, preschoolers are building their spiritual foundations so that by the time they graduate to Kindergarten they know these three basic truths:

1. God Made Me
2. God Loves Me
3. Jesus Wants To Be My Friend

Kindergarten – 5th Grade – Sunday School Overview

Families attend the 9am worship service together in the sanctuary. During the service, children are invited to experience the Children’s Moment with a Bethel pastor and then follow Sunday School teachers out for the remainder of the Sunday School programming.  From the Children’s Moment go to Sunday School JAM (“Jesus And Me” featuring the day’s theme, story, and songs), Sunday School, and Choir or Kids Fellowship.

The curriculum is focused on three basic truths:

  • I need to make the wise choice
  • I can trust God no matter what
  • I should treat others the way I want to be treated

and is designed to provoke discovery and invite kids into a new understanding of how to grow in relationship with Jesus.

Sunday School Milestones

Bethel is committed to equipping parents with experiences that foster their children’s life in faith. In addition to Sunday morning instruction, we offer Parent Cue which help parents talk about the Sunday School lesson. We also offer a link to online games and videos that reinforce the weekly Sunday School Lessons.

We assist parents and sponsors to “place in their hands the holy scriptures” by presenting our Kindergartners with a copy of SPARK! Story Bible, featuring stories from their Sunday School curriculum in February. Third grade students receive a copy of the SPARK! NRSV Bible in September and prepare for and celebrate Holy Communion in May. All Sunday School students are invited to participate in the annual Christmas Pageant.
