LUAD (Lutherans United Assisting After Disasters)
Lutherans United Assisting After Disasters (LUAD) is a mission of the South Central Wisconsin Synod of Wisconsin that began at Bethel Lutheran Church after the 2008 floods. Initially, six congregations joined together to form the new disaster recovery group. LUAD is based on several principles the most important are: a focus on the spiritual nature of helping others, control by the local congregations, a survivor-centered focus, and a commitment to remaining totally volunteer. No member of LUAD receives payment for being a part of LUAD and no survivor is ever charged for any services. LUAD does not duplicate any work usually done by existing disaster organization, it is designed to fill in where no services are provided.
