Dr. John Bauer
Dr. John Bauer is serving as the Interim Director of Administration. In this part-time capacity he will be coordinating the work of Bethel’s support staff and overseeing financial and property management.
John comes to Bethel after a career that began in Lutheran education. He worked at Wisconsin Lutheran College for 25 years as the chief academic officer and academic dean. He retired in 2014 as the president and CEO of Bethesda Lutheran Communities in Watertown, Wisconsin, an agency that supports over 2,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 14 states. He was also instrumental in developing partnerships with NGOs in 9 foreign countries to demonstrate how people with disabilities can be supported in the community.
In 2015 John started his own consulting practice, working with nonprofit organizations with strategic planning, organizational development, board governance, executive coaching, succession planning, risk management, and mergers and acquisitions. His clients have included nonprofit agencies in the senior services, early childhood, veterans’ affairs and denominational sectors.
John lives in Greenfield, Wisconsin, and is married to Sarayu Meraki, who works with John in his consulting practice as an associate and operations manager. He has three adult sons, who are all married, and is proud of his six grandchildren.
He holds masters (Concordia, Chicago) and doctoral (Marquette) degrees in education administration and was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Wisconsin Lutheran College for his servant leadership. John enjoys reading, traveling, golf and riding his ’03 Heritage Softail when the weather permits.
