Karl, an elderly homeless man, who said he was new to Madison, came to lunch at Bethel Homeless Ministries last Thursday. He sought out a Bethel volunteer and exclaimed “this is just like one big family reunion! Everyone is happy — laughing, talking, and with lots of hugs. What a great place!” And, the volunteer is happy to report that Karl returned to Bethel for lunch the next Tuesday.
On December 22nd, Bethel was notified by Dane County that they will not be renewing their contract with Bethel Homeless Support Services in 2016. Without the financial support of the county, Bethel is unable to staff the Homeless Support Services in its current form.
The Homeless Support Services Board, along with the Church Council, has transitioned the program to two days a week. Support services will be open every Tuesday and Thursday. The program will continue providing the same services and will be staffed by volunteers.
A truly unique experience – Each year, Bethel Homeless Support Services sponsors a three day, all expenses paid trip to Bethel Horizons, the church’s 548 acre property located just west of Madison near Dodgeville. This trip offers Madison’s homeless community the opportunity to seek respite from the daily struggles of life and homelessness, connect with nature through various activities, get to know one another, and find inner peace. It is, without a doubt, one of the most impactful and important activities that Bethel or Madison provide.
