Bible in a Year
Scripture Readings 2007 |
| THROUGH THE
BIBLE IN A YEAR For years
I have read the Bible daily by topics, or by books. For months at a time I
read the same letter or gospel. Two years ago I decided to read through
the Bible in a single year.
What enjoyment! It gave new zest to my reading by giving me a goal and
providing a way of marking progress.
This year as I begin my "Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year" reading again I'm
pleased to have you join me. It will be wonderful knowing that others at
Bethel will be thinking about the same words at approximately the same
time. I think you will find that this kind of reading will deepen your
walk with God.
Even though there is value in having a group of people reading on the
same schedule, I want to encourage you to read your way, rather than my
way. If you prefer to read an entire book at one setting rather than a few
chapters at a time by all means do it. If you prefer not to read Matthew
before you read Genesis, do it your way.
I do encourage you to read a psalm a day. Since the Psalms are "The
Prayer Book of the Bible," a psalm a day helps us pray.
Please let us know that you are taking this Bible reading journey by
signing our list. It will be fun to know who is taking this journey with
us. We will contact you a couple of times during the year for a gathering
to briefly share discoveries about our reading.
The psalmist wrote, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my
path. (Ps. 119:105) I know that you will find this to be true.

January 2003
A year ago I invited members of
Bethel to join me as I read through the Bible in a year. I explained
that I found this to be a method that invigorated my devotional life by
giving me a goal and a way to mark progress. Hundreds of people
responded by picking up a copy of our reading booklet.
Though not everyone completed the
entire Bible in 365 days (It took me 367 days) we have heard glowing
reports from people who have finished the journey. "Every night I
turned off my TV at 9 a.m.," one woman wrote, "and read my
lesson. When I finished I went to bed in peace. It was a wonderful
experience."
"I feel like a runner who has
just finished the course," another wrote. "And what a worthy
project this has been, to read the Bible cover to cover! As many times
as I have been in a Bible study class and have done my own reading for a
particular subject or for a daily devotion, the impact of reading, such
as this listing has prompted me to do, straight through the books of the
Bible, has been a new experience. I have a much better sense of the flow
of history and the effect the Jewish message had and continues to have
in the Judeo-Christian world right up to this day."
With good reports ringing in our
ears we offer this guide for reading through the Bible in a year. If you
are like Ray and find a road more congenial to you, take it. In the long
run we want you to read the Bible in a manner that fits your needs and
interests.
In addition to the regular reading
I encourage you to read a Psalm each day. Since the Psalms are "The
Prayer Book of the Bible," they help us pray.
The longest Psalm in the Bible
contains this short verse: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light
to my path. (v. 105)
I know that you will find this to
be true.
